Steelheads v. Crusaders

Wednesday the Steelheads played the Kent Crusaders in a much anticipated match. Both youth girls teams came on to the pitch as undefeated this season. The game was between the two top perennial girls teams in Washington. Kent has won every state title (second in league play to Budd Bay in 2008) and has only lost to one Washington team. That team was Budd Bay.
Kent is a much bigger and more experienced team, and the Steelheads' coaches knew this would be a tough match.
The Crusaders used their kicking game and exploited turnovers to score two early tries and shocked Budd Bay somewhat. But, the Steelheads came back. Tracy Backhaus, who played center and flyhalf, showed them that Budd Bay backs can run with any one's. That pressure did not yield points however. Kent scored twice more due to some mistakes by the Steelheads making it a 22-0 lead.
Late in the first half, a brilliant run from Steelheads' full back Kelsi Stockert, set the ladies up in Kent's 22. Then, the forwards worked hard to get that ball over the line. Try scored by Malory Salazar with help from the entire team! The momentum continued and another try was scored by scrumhalf Sam VanHarmelen making the score 22-10.
The last 20 minutes of the match Kent's fitness and size began to show more on the Steelheads and the Crusaders won the match 49-10. "I know for a fact they are not 40 points better than us" said the head coach Tim housh. "Our players worked hard and learned a great deal. I was very very proud of what they did. We have a lot to work on, but I think now they know what it takes to play at the top level."

Weekend Reports: Buffaloes, Bandits and Barbarians

The Buffaloes continue a winning streak this weekend. Final score was 39-13. This puts the Budd Bay men at 10-0 in league matches! Great rugby played by all against ORSU in Oregon. Everyone put forth the best effort and never let up for the entire 80 minutes. Congrats Men!

The Bandits participated in a round robin with the Seattle Mudhens and ORSU this Saturday. The weather was beautiful and the matches were fierce. The Bandits started off the day playing the Mudhens in a blowout match. The Mudhens reported at the social that they had anticipated the Bandits bringing the skills and aggression that shocked them in the fall, thus they had brought thier "A" game. The Bandits lost to the Mudhens 60-0 but that did not stop the Bandits. During the Mudhens v ORSU match, Budd Bay cleared their heads and focused on how to play a good match with ORSU. The Bandits defense killed ORSU in their second match of the day, holding them until the half at a tie score of 5-5. In the second half, ORSU scored once more on the Bandits. Final score ORSU 10-Budd Bay 5. The Bandits then paired up with the Mudhens in a motley match of WA vs OR. This was a great pair up and "Mud Bay" tied the Oregon women 5-5. Overall, the round robin was a great success for all teams involved. There were a handful of injuries sustained, but the Bandits played great Rugby and left the fans and coaches very proud. The Bandits play their last home match of the season on Saturday March 27th against Spokane. Match will be @Rainier Vista. We'll see you there!

Barbarian U-16's beat Seattle 61-5 on Friday night. The game was played under lights at Magnuson Park and the U-16's put on quite a performance. They were clinical in most areas and very unselfish in the way they went about it. Brett Woods scored 4 tries, Ryan Glendenning scored 2, Zach Riley, Nick Lewis, Kylar Anderson, Jacob Durr, and Johnathon Winters all scored tries. Nice work Fellas!
Saturday the U-19'S failed to field 15 players and were handed a lopsided defeat by Rainer.
On Sunday the club hosted a U-14 Jamboree with almost 50 kids under the age of 14 from Budd Bay, Seattle, Rainier, Kent and Yelm. It was an awesome day with great talent on display!

Weekend Reports

The Bandits beat the Portland Lady Pigs in a blowout 12-0. The weather was cold and rainy but the Bandits had fun! The Budd Bay women play in Seattle next weekend in a Round Robin match between the Mud Hens and ORSU. Good Luck Ladies!

The Budd Bay Men's team played against the Seattle Quake at Rainer Vista this weekend. The Buffaloes were behind at the half , but triumphed in the end. Final Score 45-14. Nice work Buffaloes!

Sunday the U-19 girls team played Lynnwood. Steelheads have been keeping up a fabulous winning streak and it continues. The final score was 76-5. Congratulations Steelheads!

The Barbarians played three matches this weekend. Due to injuries, a great deal of inexperienced players were stepping it up. Credit goes to the U-16's who helped take on the Tacoma Tsunami's. The match was definitely one Budd Bay should have won. However, with the the inexperience came lack of discipline and there were a great deal of penalties for offside offenses. The U-16 Barbarians played the Liberty Patriots on Sunday. They were down a few starters due to the events of Saturday. The guys fought hard but eventually the tough game the day prior caught up to them and Liberty pulled ahead with a couple of late tries. The U-16's showed great enthusiasm and discipline, and the final score was definitely not a fair indication of the match at 5-35.
Barbarians U-14's then played a third half against Liberty and lost 5-10. The U-19 teams are very inexperienced right now but the coaching staff is excited to see all the young new players develop as the season progresses. Thanks for the hard work Barbarians! Keep it up!

Bandits Report for March 6

This Saturday, the Bandits took the feild at Rainier Vista for the first home game of the season. The Bandits wasted no time with lower level club teams, but rather took on ORSU, a USA Premiere League team. Orsu is one of the top 8 women's teams in the country. The Budd Bay women held their own against ORSU, leaving them only enough room to score one try in the first half. With courage and determination, the Bandits entered the second half of the match. ORSU appeared shaken and put in their Eagles level players to score 17 more points. Despite the final score of ORSU 22 to Bandits 0, the Bandits played an intense defensive game. They held strong and played solid rugby. Last year ORSU scored over 50 points on the Bandits, but not this season!
The Bandits are taking the field with feirce desire and dedication this season. They play at home again this Saturday, March 13th at Rainier Vista. Kick off is on the upper field at 1pm. We will see you there!
